John
Michael Strickland, D.V.M.
Diplomate A.B.V.P. Companion Animal Practice
Dr. Strickland, the practice owner, is a University
of Georgia graduate, receiving his DVM in 1979. In 1993, he
became board certified in companion animal practice and is a member
of the American
Board of Veterinary Practitioners. Only 2% of small animal veterinarians
are board certified. His special interests are in reproduction and
surgery. His standards are high, and he has made Leesburg Veterinary
Hospital into an AAHA-certified hospital of quality medical care
for small animals in the area, including rabbits, ferrets and "pocket
pets." Dr. Strickland has 7 children and is actively involved
in 4-H, Boy Scouts and the Animal Advisory Board for Loudoun County.
Krisi
Erwin, DVM, LAc, CCRT
Dr. Krisi Erwin
has been with Leesburg Veterinary Hospital since June of 2003. She
is a Loudoun County native and received her Bachelor's of Science
degree from Longwood
College. She graduated from the Virginia-Maryland
Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in May of 2003.
Dr. Erwin
became a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapist through the Canine
Rehabilitation Institute in 2009. She also became a Certified Veterinary
Acupuncturist through the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society
(IVAS) in 2008. Her acupuncture case study was published in IVAS'
journal, The Point, in 2008. Dr. Erwin completed several internships
in noted practices, both locally and elsewhere in the country, while
earning her certifications and has had the good fortune to learn
from some of the most respected experts in these fields.
Dr. Erwin's
main goal is to provide a "wholistic" approach to veterinary
medicine and helps to keep her patients fit and healthy by providing
excellent preventative medicine, appropriate diagnostics, nutritional
counseling, and necessary supportive therapies such as rehabilitation
medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine. She continues to challenge
herself to stay up to date and to help bring these complementary
therapies to Leesburg Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Erwin enjoys working
with all of her patients and appreciates the bonds she forms with
both the pets and their owners. Her special interests also include:
Greyhound health care, senior pet wellness, and pawspice (veterinary
hospice) and palliative care.
Dr. Erwin
is married to her best friend, Jeremy, and their family includes
their dogs (Amadeus, K.C., and Luna) and four cats (Oliver, Mabel,
Georgette, and Amos). Dr. Erwin enjoys various activities such as
reading, arts and crafts, and spending time with family and friends.
Gerry
Hish, D.V.M.
Dr. Gerry Hish grew up in Fairfax County and joined Leesburg Veterinary
Hospital in the summer of 2005. He received a B.S. in Wildlife Biology
from Virginia Tech
in 1995 and graduated from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College
of Veterinary Medicine in 1999. Dr. Hish lived and worked in Fairfax
for six years before moving to Leesburg to raise his family.
Amy
Nugent, D.V.M.
Dr. Amy
Nugent, a 2001 graduate of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College
of Veterinary Medicine, is our newest associate to join Leesburg
Veterinary Hospital in December of 2008. After graduation in 2001,
she worked in private practice in Roanoke, VA for 3 years where
she cared for traditional pets and exotics as well as assist with
the care for Mill Mountain Zoo.
In June
of 2004, she and her husband (also a DVM in the area) relocated
to Winchester, VA, where she more recently worked at an AAHA hospital
in the Winchester area for the past 4 years. Her special interests
are in cardiology, soft-tissue surgery, abdominal and cardiac ultrasound,
oncology, pocket pet and exotic medicine. She also has a special
focus for lymphoma and diabetic management. Her style of medicine
involves emphasis on client education to allow clients an active
role in understanding the treatment and management of their pet's
conditions.
She believes
in staying current in all the latest advances and trends of care,
while still keeping practical solutions in mind. Her treatment style
is compassionate yet scientific, with an emphasis on preventative
geriatric screening to catch serious conditions early, pain management,
and treating the whole patient not just a disease. She has ambitions
to complete the accreditation process for the American Board of
Veterinary Practitioners under Dr. Strickland's excellent mentorship.
Dr. Nugent
currently resides in Winchester and in her free time enjoys quality
time with her wonderful husband Marcos, her energetic son Ethan,
spunky daughter Isabel and their three cats Cucho, Chanchita, and
Chiquiti. Dr.
Nugent is a member of the Veterinary Emergency Critical Care Society
(VECCS)
Laura
Rosenthal, D.V.M.
Dr. Laura Rosenthal earned
a B.S. in Animal Science from Virginia Tech in 2000 and her DVM
from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine
in 2004. Originally from Silver Spring, MD, Dr. Rosenthal is relocating
from Western North Carolina and is very happy to be joining Leesburg
Veterinary Hospital and live closer to her roots.
Dr. Rosenthal
has a special interest in abdominal ultrasound, general surgery,
dentistry, and behavior medicine. She is a very compassionate veterinarian
who enjoys the bonds that she makes with both animals and clients.
She feels that it is very important that clients understand disease
processes and treatment plans so that they can play an active role
in the health care of their pets.
In her free
time, Dr. Rosenthal enjoys hiking and other outdoor activities with
her husband, Matt, young daughter, Ava, and dog, Casey. She also
shares her house with 3 orange tabby cats.
